There is always the option of running 3ds Max in OpenGL or legacy D3D if the graphics card doesn't work well with Nitrous and DX, but I do want to note that no/little testing was ever done on the Mac machines as 3ds Max is a Windows only software. With Boot Camp, it may be a different story. This is apparently a known issue on the Parallel forums. There have been some users who have had issues with Parallels using 3ds Max lately, and that mainly has to do with mouse buttons not registering properly.
